About Us

The Institute for Resource Efficiency and Energy Strategies (IREES) works in the area of sustainable energy and resource utilisation, focusing on new technologies and services for energy and material efficiency and low-emission production processes. IREES carries out interdisciplinary work in its own teams with close connections among the three business units Energy Efficiency Networks, Energy Projections and Technologies and Socio-Scientific Evaluation. Here, among other things, analyses are made of market barriers and how to overcome them via policy measures and business self-organisation. Overall economic and social consequences of new solutions are also analysed.

In terms of methodology, the work concentrates on bridge building in hybrid energy systems, social science acceptance and innovation research methods, and monitoring methods for energy technology progress in enterprises and industry sectors.

Due to the diversity of the required technical disciplines, methodology and data sources, IREES frequently works in close cooperation with other research and industry partners – especially with the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) in Karlsruhe. In this type of collaboration, IREES undertakes particularly application-oriented research and development tasks. IREES was founded in the year 2006 by five researchers as a spin-off of Fraunhofer ISI, and is the legal successor of BSR Sustainability GmbH.

IREES is also committed to climate protection and resource conservation in its own activities.

Since 1 October 2014, Dipl.-Ing. Michael Mai and since 1 November 2017 Dr. Jan Steinbach have been the Managing Directors.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eberhard Jochem served as Managing Director until 30 September 2014. Dipl.-Ing. Michael Schön served as Managing Director from 1 October 2014 until 31 March 2017.

IREES supports with its projects the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. Especially goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), goal 13 (Climate Action) and goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) are part of our work.
