The Institute for Resource Efficiency and Energy Strategies (IREES) conducts interdisciplinary research into sustainable resource use and focuses mainly on energy and material efficiency and low emission production processes. IREES examines research and development possibilities as well as technology options and their economic and social impacts, conflicting objectives and relevant innovation and diffusion policies. Because of the wide range of expertise, methods and data sources required IREES works very closely with a variety of partners, especially with the Fraunhofer ISI (Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research) in Karlsruhe. In such cooperations, IREES concentrates on the applied research and service oriented tasks in three business units:

• Energy Efficiency Networks
• Energy Projections and Technologies
• Evaluation and Socio-Economic Research

IREES GmbH was originally founded as BSR Sustainability GmbH on 1 January 2006 and officially changed its name to IREES on 1 July 2009.

Climate and Environment Protection at IREES

• Since 1st of June 2011 the CO₂ emissions of the business trips of the employees of IREES are compensated by supporting climate protection projects.
• Since 2011, the CO₂ emissions of our energy consumption for space and water heating (based on the annual accounting) is compensated by climate protection projects as well.
• Since the founding of IREES in January 2006 we purchase certified green electricity.
• To minimise business trips by car, we are a member of a car-sharing organisation since the founding of IREES.
• Our only company vehicle is a bicycle.
